Lava carvings (especially cameos) became popular in the early 19th century when wealthy Europeans embarked on the Grand Tour of Europe and they served as mementoes. This is a wonderful teeny lava carving of a pastoral scene. It has a mahogany frame which is very timeworn. It looks wonderful placed on a little easel.
